CV

Cody Rutty is an American painter based in San Francisco. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas and ink on paper, his practice centers on large-scale paintings and intricate paper works developed through what he calls iterative abstraction: a layered process in which each mark, pass, and decision remains visible in the final structure.

His work begins with sweeping lines that establish a compositional backbone, then builds through repeated acts of selection, rhythm, pressure, and refinement. Drawing, music, and architecture all inform the work: lines behave like instruments, surfaces are built like impossible structures, and images emerge gradually from density rather than being imposed at the outset.
